Background
Are memories simply our recollection and recognition of past experiences, or do they drive us to seek out “new” experiences in order to connect with the past and reflect on it? Are we not relying on a learned sense of happiness in our pursuit of happiness that is based on our memories?
If so, the experiences that created our first memories somehow govern and influence our future. They may be subconscious or forgotten experiences, while others are more prominent or just in the process of being rediscovered. While creating these paintings, I thought about the importance of memories in my life and how they affect me. Why do I find joy in running through a lawn sprinkler, jumping in the water, smelling the sea air? Why am I attracted to certain colors and shapes? At the end of the thought chain are the raw memory of love and “Geborgenheit”. These paintings represent the memories I was able to uncover by actively searching for them. This was not an idea I thought of, but rather a state of mind I reached after navigating the early years of grieving my mother, who passed away in 2021.
